Special Mention to Chop Shop for their creativity of the challenges… Garner from Rufus for ability to wear almost no clothes being the top ranker by far on the Daisy Duke challenge, being not only in the Rufus clips, but most of the other team’s videos as well.

Mile North is hosing a Best Trick Contest at Fairhope Skatepark in Alabama on August 25th, 2012.

Entropy Skateboards out of Oklahoma is giving out prizes and having their team riders on hand
Wooden Heart Skate Shop will be having one of their riders from Pascagoula DJing the event.

Arts and Crafts vendors – We are providing free 10 x 10 booth spaces to local businesses and artists with the option to upgrade for a cost. The Free space is generating lots of interest and will ensure a good turnout. Each vendor that participate – Some of the vendors participating include- Miller’s Grand Events who has provided tents, tables and chairs for the event, Smoothie King and Verizon Wireless.

Entertainment Tent – The entertainment tent will have live entertainment playing under it through out the day and there is also an open mic that people can register for. Also under this tent the Baldwin County Youth Orchestra will be performing.

Pet Adoption – The Baldwin county Humane Society will be on hand to have a huge pet adoption day. They will be promoting this through their Social Medias, radio, and handing out flyers.

Blood Drive – Life South will be on site with their blood Mobile doing a Blood Drive and Marrow Drive.

The King of Jackson contest is similar to Thrasher’s King of the Road. Your team will have a series of tasks to complete for points. It will run from Friday June 22-24. Arrive at Wheelson (133 Milsaps Ave.) Friday night to receive your instructions. The contest will start at 12 am June 23rd. You will have all day Saturday to complete as many of the tasks possible. Sunday June 24th will be an after party BBQ and announcement of the winning team. Camping will be available at Wheelson (133 Milsaps Ave.).

MIDTOWN ARTS DISTRICT

Founded in 2007 on New York City’s Governors Island, what began as a few thousand enthusiasts enjoying a handful of participatory art projects on a sunny July afternoon has ballooned into a multi-day, multi-city event that drew over 30,000 participants in NYC, Boston, Jackson and Detroit in 2011. In 2012, FIGMENT seeks to continue its mission to offer free, inclusive and participatory art to entire communities, removing the barriers of museum and gallery walls and entrance fees and blurring the lines between those who create and those who enjoy art.
FIGMENT Jackson will take place in the Midtown Arts District. With a variety of buildings and vacant lots 4 acres, the site can accommodate practically any artistic vision. The Midtown Arts District is located in the North Midtown neighborhood, with its central node at Millsaps Avenue and its boundaries expanding as the participants require. The city and neighborhood have plans to redevelop much of the area, and we see FIGMENT as a way to bring the vitality of art and collaboration to the area’s future.

FIGMENT is about participation. Precisely because it requires interaction between the art, the artist, and the viewer, participatory art can be a vehicle for personal and social transformation. The passive viewer is made active, contributing to the creation, understanding and very definition of the art. These activities bring together artists and community members in ways that build relationships and encourage individual creativity. We believe visitors of all ages and backgrounds have something to offer, and invite them to participate in installation art, costuming, interactive performance, games, activities, workshops, and anything else the mind can envision.

We will begin having monthly meetings at 6:00pm on the third Wednesday of each month in meeting room 1 at the Starkville Sportsplex, The first of which will be on January 18th.

There are a few fundraisers and other events to discuss. We will also be showing our very first Starkville Skatepark Project logo. Not only that, but we would like to discuss t-shirt designs, so if you have any ideas draw them up and bring them to the meeting. If you have anything else that you would like to discuss at the meeting feel free to message me or just bring it up during the meeting. Get the word out about the meeting too. Tell your friends, neighbors, priests, cab drivers, teachers, barbers, librarians, milk men, or anyone else you can think of, we need to get this thing rolling. Santa came a little early this year for 50 Midtown Jackson youth, thanks to generous partners of the SkateMS Foundation. Donated by Swell O Phonic, skateboards were distributed to students of Project Innovation, a program of Midtown Partners which provides a quality afterschool experience for youth of the Midtown neighborhood. The SkateMS Foundation, established in 2011 to encourage kids to get outside, exercise, and enjoy the growing sport of skateboarding. This was featured on Jackson, MS local TV station WLBT.

The SkateMS Foundation Skateboard Giveaway To Benefit Kids of Midtown

The SkateMS Foundation, established in 2011 to encourage kids to get outside, exercise, and enjoy the growing sport of skateboarding, has organized the event for Friday, December 9.

The event will will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Mid-Jackson Family Resource Center, 301 Adelle Street and feature SkateMS volunteers providing hands-on instruction and education on proper riding. The Brain Injury Association of Mississippi, another sponsor, will give a presentation on the importance of wearing a helmet to the youth. Supporting the SkateMS mission of building safe, concrete public skate parks in Mississippi, sponsor Swell-O-Phonic has been a long-time supporter of a local free park for youth.

Formed in 1995 for the social and economic revitalization of their neighborhood, the mission of Midtown Partners is to build a vibrant, healthy, sustainable community, while serving as a catalyst for improving the quality of life. Their after-school program, Project Innovation, was awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence in 2010 and provides students with experience in STEM/Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, as well as art education. Participation is free and transportation provided to students who must be in second through fifth grades and residents of Midtown.

SkateMS co-director Austin Cannon shares, “We’re excited about this fun opportunity to give away skateboards to deserving kids, while educating them on responsible riding and promoting our mantra of ‘Kids Need Fresh Air.’ Swell-O-Phonic has been so generous and we think these kids are going to be pretty excited to see us on Friday.”
