The SkateMS Foundation
The SkateMS Foundation was founded in April of 2011 to encourage kids to get outside, exercise, and enjoy the growing sport of skateboarding. Our work focuses on building public, concrete skate parks, open and accessible to anyone in the community. Our vision is to build a community of skaters around these parks to learn the sport of skateboarding, have safe access to outdoor fitness, and provide a new outlet for individual, physical creative expression.
So far in our short existence, we have given over 50 complete boards and safety gear away to deserving children. We also just finished building a spot for them to skate in their neighborhood. This spot is sculpted concrete decked out with murals from local artists.
We are currently working with the City of Vicksburg, consulting for their public park. We are also focusing on a public park in Jackson MS. Everything is lined up for Jackson’s park except money.
We have a weekend long go skateboarding day contest that was announced this week. It is The King of Jackson and should bring a lot of skaters together for an awesome time for everyone.
In the fall of 2010 we launched our Kids Need Fresh Air campaign, with t-shirts, stickers and informational cards.
In April 2011 we partnered with The Community Foundation of Greater Jackson to become a non-profit, becoming the SkateMS Foundation having Austin Cannon and Frank Henn both having roles as Co-Directors.
In March 2011, we were contacted by Vicksburg, MS to help with their efforts to build a concrete public. SkateMS signed on as the technical advisors and consultants to represent the local skateboarding community.
In May 2011, 40 local musicians help put together a double CD full of all different genres with all proceeds benefiting the SkateMS Foundation.
In December 2011, SkateMS partnered with local organizations to give away 50 skateboards and helmets to underprivileged youth. Local skateboarders came out to give the kids lessons for the afternoon.
In an effort to provide safe recreational venues for children, SkateMS Foundation approached The Community Foundation of Greater Jackson about starting a SkateMS fund. Charitable contributions to the fund would support the group’s efforts to plan, design and construct concrete public skate parks in central Mississippi.
Not Your Father’s Community Foundation!
Frank Henn and Austin Cannon are turning their passion into a purpose. They want to give the tri-county area the gift of spaces for children to be outside, exercise, and enjoy the growing sport of skateboarding. Their organization, the SkateMS Foundation, opened a fund here at CFGJ in order to raise money to build concrete public skate parks in the area. Your tax deductible contribution will help them realize that dream. Contact us for more information.
